Title: My Sister the Serial Killer
Author: Oyinkan Braithwaite
Genre: Lit Fic
Content Warnings: Murder…
I’m a pretty fast reader, and it’s not uncommon for me to finish a book in a day. What is less common is me sitting down to read a book and not coming up for air until I finish, which is exactly what happened with this masterpiece.
Korede is smart, responsible, practical, and (according to her) not all that attractive. Her baby sister Ayoola is everything she’s not–flirty, flighty, and hot. And she has a penchant for killing her boyfriends. Korede is a protective older sister, so when Ayoola calls her to help literally and figuratively clean up her bloody messes, she does so without complaint. But when Ayoola starts dating the man Korede has been in love with forever, she has to decide if she wants to be loyal to her sister or save the man she loves. But is he really the man she loves if he allows himself to be so easily fooled by her sister’s pretty face and even prettier words? Well, this one is not a romance and so therefore I won’t be spoiling it for you.
Alright. So. This book is brilliant. The writing is sharp and witty in a way that left me laughing out loud, even in a book about murder. But what is so remarkable about this story is how much I felt for the characters, even though the whole thing is relatively short. It hardly took any time at all for me to feel Korede’s struggle. Reading her thoughts as she watched her younger sister seduce the man she loves, watching her watch that man so easily fall under Ayoola’s spell–it was gut-wrenching in the best possible way. And the ending was definitely not what I was expecting to happen, but I loved how it all pulled itself together. Honestly, this was one of the most well-written books I have read this year, and if you need something quick, engaging, and utterly brilliant, then this is the one for you.
