Book Review: Fable by Adrienne Young

Title: Fable

Author: Adrienne Young

Sub-genre: Fantasy

This one took me a little longer to get into than I would have thought, since I’m a fan of this author, but by the time I was a third of the way in, I was all in.

Fable has been fighting for the past four years to save enough money to book passage off the hellish island where her father abandoned her after her mother was killed in a shipwreck. When she is forced to flee the island earlier than planned, she seeks passage with a young buyer named West. West is reluctant to take on Fable, but he takes her money and puts her to work. All Fable wants is to get back to her father’s home base, to prove to him she is capable of surviving, and earn a place on one of his ships. But Fable doesn’t know much of the truth about her father and his business, and she knows even less about West and his crew. Fable has to uncover long hidden secrets, learn to trust her instincts, and grow into her own person if she is going to continue to survive.

Alright, so I think I had a hard time getting into this one because the strength of the book is in the relationships, and for the first chunk of the book, Fable is really on her own. Even when she first boards the ship, she is still mostly by herself. Things started to pick up for me once she started making connections with the other crew members, and with West. I thought all of the relationships were really strong, especially the one between Fable and her father. I also really liked how Fable is a survivor, and even though she goes through some pretty rough stuff throughout the book, she overcomes and finds a way to come out on top. I don’t know that I would run out to buy the sequel on release day, but I would definitely pick it up and see how the story ends.

Overall Rating: 4.5 stars
