Book Review: Heroine’s Journey by Sarah Kuhn

Author: Sarah Kuhn

Sub-genre: Sci-fi/Superhero

Trope(s): Friends to lovers

So I think this might be my favorite of the Heroine’s trilogy, which I wasn’t really expecting since friends to lovers is not my fave. But this book was a delight, and a perfect distraction in these crappy times.

Bea, Evie’s younger sister, has grown up a lot since we first met her in book one. No longer a smart ass teenager, she’s now a smart ass adult, one with real powers and real convictions. Bea is desperate to be accepted into the heroine’s trio with Evie and Aveda, but Evie continues to insist she isn’t ready yet. But when Bea starts to receive targeted messages from the Otherworld, she takes superheroine matters into her own hands. Bea is determined to find answers, even when it means putting herself in situations that grow more dangerous by the minute. Luckily, she has her childhood friend and former rival Sam to help take her mind off things (with lots and lots of hot, “no strings attached” sex, of course). Bea has to overcome issues related to the loss of her mother, fight the bad guys, convince her sister to treat her like a grown up, and deal with the fact that her feelings for Sam go beyond casual sex. But of course, everything manages to work itself out and they all live happily ever after.

Alright, so this book managed to grab me from the first moment, simply because of its ties to the Ripped Bodice. If you haven’t been to or heard of Ripped Bodice, it’s an all-romance bookstore in LA and it is one of the most magical places on earth. I believe Sarah used to work there, and she bases the bookstore Bea works at loosely off of her experiences there. And since the owners of Ripped Bodice are sisters named Bea and Leah (and book Bea’s best friend is named Leah), and there’s a one-eyed dog, much like Ripped Bodice’s mascot Fitzwilliam (RIP), yeah, I was in from the get go. But personal connections aside, I loved this book. Friends to lovers is hit or miss for me, but I really liked watching the connection between Bea and Sam deepen throughout the course of the book. I also really liked how the Otherworld operated, it was interesting and it took me some time to figure it all out (which I like, I want to be caught off guard by twists!). I found this book to be exciting, sweet, and full of laughter and heart.

Overall Rating: 4.5 stars
