Sub-genre: Contemporary

If you had asked teenage me what the most romantic thing in the world is, I probably would have spun a story about meeting a hot British guy while studying abroad and falling madly in love. Delighted to say that adult me is still very much into this fantasy, and therefore Hot British Boyfriend is basically written for me.

Ellie’s teenage life is basically in shambles after she not only makes a fool of herself at a school party, but then has the entire incident posted to the internet for the whole world to see. That, coupled with the betrayal of her supposed best friend, leads her to be open to any kind of escape, and when one presents itself in the form of a semester abroad in England, she jumps at the chance. As a last minute replacement, Ellie doesn’t have a lot of time to fully consider what she’s doing, and when she arrives and realizes the program is aimed at the so-called gifted kids, she is immediately faced with academic challenges. But she’s in England, and with the help of her roommate and her roommate’s friends, she starts to settle in. And then she meets Will (because of course the perfect British boyfriend is named Will). Will is older and super hot and has very wealthy parents. Ellie lets him think she’s older than she actually is (the study abroad program is hosted by a university) and the two start dating. Will seems like the perfect boyfriend, but when he misses out on an important trip, Ellie starts to question her feelings for Will–and ponder if she might actually have feelings for one her good friends, Dev. Ellie has to figure out where her heart lies, with the hot British boyfriend, or the sweet and caring best friend.

Honestly, friends, if you find yourself just in need of a smile (a common occurrence these days), this is the perfect book for you. Every moment of it just made my heart so happy and squishy. It really is like traveling back in time and reading about my perfect teenage fantasy. As an added bonus, spending time in England and in Venice (via the oh so important trip) was a magical escape. It felt like a mini vacation in book form, and I am most certainly here for those right now. If you want your heart to feel all warm and fuzzy, this is most definitely the book for you!
