Title: Incendiary

Author: Zoraida Cordova

Sub-genre: Fantasy

As y’all know, I have been reading a lot of fantasy lately. Like a lot a lot. The real world sucks and I don’t want to be in it, so fantasy has been my escape. And a lot of recent fantasy reads have been on the meh side for me, but this one killed it. I was hooked from the first chapter and I did not want to put it down.

Ren is a rebel Whisper who has the ability to remove memories from people’s minds. Sometimes this power is used for good, like when someone has a traumatic experience and they don’t want to constantly relive it. But Ren can also use her power to take everything from a person’s mind, leaving them a hollow shell of their former self. Ren spent her childhood being forced to use her powers as a weapon for the king, but she was rescued by the rebels and trained to be a member of one of their core units. But when Ren makes one terrible mistake, she breaks from her team, deciding the only way to make things right is by going back to the palace and going undercover. Nothing is what it seems on the surface, and Ren has to uncover secrets, alliances, and true identities before she can truly right the wrongs of her past.

Okay. So first, I think the reason this book hooked me so early on is because we are dropped right into the action. From a writer’s perspective, this book is a masterclass in world-building. It never felt overwhelming, and it was layered in so skillfully that I felt right there with the characters from the very first page. Ren is my absolute favorite kind of heroine, as she is somewhat morally ambiguous, but ultimately fighting for what she knows is right. I also loved all of the side characters.

There are some truly remarkable plot twists in this book, and even though I saw some of the bigger ones coming, I was still surprised by many different turns the book took along the way. Honestly, the only thing I don’t like about this book is that I have to wait for the next one to come out. If you’re looking for an escape, Incendiary has got it.
