Book Review: Last Tang Standing by Lauren Ho

Sub-genre: Contemporary/women’s fiction

Alright so this book is basically what you would get if Crazy Rich Asians and Bridget Jones’s Diary had a baby, and well that hook sold me immediately.

Andrea Tang is in her thirties and still single, which for her traditional Chinese family is practically a crime. But Andrea is more focused on making partner at her high end law firm than dating too seriously, also due to the high expectations of her family. When she meets Eric at a fancy party, she doesn’t realize he’s a mega billionaire, and she charms him with her blunt and honest attitude. Eric and Andrea start a very slow burn courting, and Andrea’s family is thrilled she managed to snag such a wealthy eligible bachelor. And Eric is nice. And things are fine. But he doesn’t have quite the same spark as her workplace nemesis Suresh. But Suresh is engaged so nothing to worry about there anyway. But when Andrea’s mother gets sick, everything is thrown into disarray inside Andrea’s head and heart. Does she want the man who’s perfect on paper or the man who makes her heart go pitter pat? Even though this book does lean a little more toward women’s fiction than romance, this one does have an HEA (no fear).

As someone who made her way to romance via the chick lit explosion of the 2000s, I was here for all of this book. I loved Andrea, I loved Suresh, I loved all of the side characters. The writing is super witty and sharp and I was instantly enamored with the voice. Because I’m me, I could have done with a little more romance action–this was my third or fourth book this month with no sexy times and I would have loved to see some of that–but I do think the chemistry is there enough on the page to make up for it. If you’re a fan of the rom coms, this is likely a book you would enjoy.

Overall Rating: 4.5 stars
