Title: Legendborn

Author: Tracy Deonn

Sub-genre: Fantasy

So not going to lie, I was super stoked to see Legendborn in my last Owl Crate box because it was definitely a book that was already on my radar. And guys, this one completely blew me away.

Bree is a sixteen year old Black girl entering an early college program at NC Chapel Hill. Bree’s mother recently died in a car accident, and she is in the throes of dealing with–or shutting down and avoiding–her grief. When she witnesses a mysterious, definitely not of this world creature attack at a gathering of students, Bree is thrust into a world she never knew existed. A world of legends, and powers, and monsters, one that completely overwhelms her at first. But a world that she discovers is linked to her mother and their family history. Bree has to give herself over to all of her curiosities and emotions if she is going to figure out what exactly happened to her mother, and where her place in this new world actually is. Legendborn is a twist on the old legend of King Arthur that I don’t think anyone would see coming.

Ugh. Guys. This book is so good. This was the kind of fantasy book that had me from the first moment, and kept my interest piqued the entire time. Fantasy usually takes me a minute to get acclimated and interested, but I was in this one from the jump. The way the story plays out left me guessing (which isn’t the easiest thing to do) and I was constantly surprised by the plot twists and turns. I loved Bree and her supporting cast of characters, even her (what I think is going to be) love triangle. I don’t want to say too much about it because I don’t want to give anything away, but this is a book every fantasy fan would enjoy. This is definitely one I will read again, and will purchase the sequel as soon as it’s available.
