Book Review: Prince of Broadway by Joanna Shupe

Author: Joanna Shupe

Sub-genre: Historical

I am a suck.er for Gilded Age romance. Historical has never been my favorite sub-genre, but when I discovered the Gilded Age, I was like yes please, put them in my veins. Joanna Shupe definitely writes some of my favorite GA novels and I was super stoked to get her latest book, Prince of Broadway. This is the second in her Uptown Girls series, after Rogue of Fifth Avenue.

Prince of Broadway is about the middle Greene sister, Florence. We met Florence in book one, and she is a firecracker, to put it mildly. She doesn’t care about rules or society, she does what she wants. Which means she is my kind of girl. Florence begins spending time at the fanciest casino in town, despite the fact women are not allowed inside, because she has her sights set on opening a casino of her own one day. The tough, take no prisoners casino owner Clayton Madden knows he should kick her out, but he can’t seem to bring himself to get rid of her. Florence meets with Clayton and convinces him to give her lessons in the trade. Despite his better judgment, Clayton agrees, taking her into his tutelage and showing her the (dangerous) ropes. The immediate attraction between the two is a problem on multiple levels, since Florence comes from a high society family and Clayton is a criminal (gambling is illegal). But that doesn’t stop the two of them for falling for each other, big time.

First and foremost, this book is HAWT. There is a mutual masturbation scene that left me fanning my cheeks. Yowza. The chemistry between Florence and Clay is off the charts. Clay is also one of my favorite kind of heroes: he’s gruff, tough, and hates the very idea of love. Florence is so feisty and strong-willed, she was a delight to read. Really, the only thing I didn’t love about this book was that it overlaps with book one. When I started reading, I assumed this one took place after Rogue, but the first half or so actually overlaps, which was a little weird, since I already knew what was going to happen with those characters. But other than that, this one was an absolute delight to read. I can’t wait for more in this series. Give them all to me now!

Overall Rating: 4.5 stars
