Book Review: Would Like to Meet by Rachel Winters

Author: Rachel Winters

Genre: Women’s Fiction masquerading as Rom-Com

As soon as I read the back cover of this book, I was like yes please give it to me right now. From the copy, I got that this was an enemies to lovers romance. Spoiler alert: it’s not. This could definitely be shelved as women’s fiction, but it’s popping up as romance, likely due to its adorable cartoon cover. The debate about illustrated covers rages on, and honestly, I mostly like them. What I don’t like is when the cover and copy combo are misleading. Not into that. I am one of those people that assumes an illustrated cover is a rom-com (which is on me for assuming), but it’s mostly not the case these days.

So. This story is pitched as Evie versus Ezra. Evie is assistant to a screenplay agent and Ezra is the agency’s star client. Ezra was contracted to write a rom-com, which he feels is beneath him, but the agency needs this paycheck in order to avoid bankruptcy. Evie is assigned the task of making sure this screenplay gets written, no matter what. Since she has secret dreams of becoming a writer herself, she takes the challenge on. Ezra is a dick and claims rom-coms and meet cutes are so unrealistic he could never write one. So to provide him with inspiration, Evie stages various meet cutes in her own life and writes about them for Ezra. Are you expecting Evie and Ezra to fall in love during this process? I was. But they don’t! Evie actually finds herself falling for an adorable single dad and his daughter, who hang out at the coffee shop where she works. There’s very little actual romance until the very end.

Okay. All the plot/bad shelving aside, I really enjoyed reading this book. Had I gone into it expecting women’s fic, I would probably give it at least 4.5 stars. But since it is pitched as a romance (and not just based on my assumptions, the back cover barely mentions single dad and definitely sets Ezra up to seem like the hero), it took away from my enjoyment factor. The voice is great, I had several laugh out loud moments, and I loved Evie’s group of friends. Also, my main character is also named Evie, so of course, I loved her. I thought the premise was super cute, and I loved the peek into screenplay writing (I’m a sucker for an industry/celebrity romance). I also really liked single dad and his daughter, they were charming and sweet. But I wanted it to be a romance. *shrug*

Overall Rating: 4 stars
