Trip Report: Solvang, CA June 2021

In an effort to streamline my life a little bit better, I’m transitioning more and more of my lifestyle blog content over here to my “book” blog. Which is really now my author blog, and since I basically only write about things happening in my life on my lifestyle blog, well, hopefully you see where this is going. So don’t be surprised if you start seeing more travel/movies/TV show stuff over here. And if you don’t want to read about it, that’s totally cool! For today, I’m recapping our mini vacay we took to the adorable town of Solvang a couple weeks ago.

As you all know by now, I am making it my mission to be home as little as possible during the summer. Of course, now that the state of California has decided to drop its mask mandates and social distancing requirements, it makes things more difficult because, you know, I don’t want my kid to catch a deadly disease. Luckily, we were able to get out of town the week before restrictions were lifted, and I am so thankful because it will be the only vacation the kiddo gets for who knows how long now. We decided to meet up with some friends of ours who have a son around the same age as Squirt, and even though Solvang might not be the first place you think of when you think of family vacation, it ended up being the perfect spot. Solvang is a little town near Santa Barbara that is known for its Dutch history and its proximity to the Santa Ynez wine country. I had been there before on a girls’ trip, and was a little worried it wouldn’t be great for kids, but since our friends are from NorCal, it was a perfect meet in the middle spot. And we had a blast.

Of course, for the kids, the hotel pool was the number one draw. Luckily, Hotel Corque has a great pool and we definitely took advantage of it.

The whole downtown area of Solvang was within walking distance of our hotel, and the whole place is cute as hell and full of fun shops to explore. I recognized this fudge shop from one of my holiday romance movies I binged last year so of course we stopped and grabbed some (delicious) fudge.

There is a bakery basically every ten feet in Solvang, which is never a bad thing in my book. Ebilskivers are a staple, and can be found in lots of different places. Wherever you choose to get them from, they are delicious.

The kiddos were very into the animatronic chefs in the window of this particular bakery, which we had to walk by several times just to see them.

On our one full day we took a little drive out to Sunstone Winery and did a tasting while the boys had a bug hunting expedition. This is a great winery to bring kids to because there is tons of open space. Also the wine was great and I took home (only) two bottles!

I honestly probably could have spent a full week in town because there were so many cute places to explore and eat at. The buildings are so fun and interesting that even the kids were entertained by just walking around town.

We had breakfast at this cute little cafe on our last morning before we sent the boys to the playground with Dad while my bestie and I went to the local bookshop (which I was a dumb dumb and forgot to take a pic of).

Not going to lie, low-key planning a solo trip back to Solvang at some point for a little writer’s retreat. It’s the perfect town to get some writing done and still have some fun exploring. Also, we’re made a standing date with our NorCal friends to meet up again in the summers because it was such an easy and pleasant mini vacay. Can’t beat that when you’re traveling with kids!
